The Roles Wristwatches Play

Have you ever considered what the role of a wristwatch or any clock for that matter plays in the cinema experience? Where would Back to the Future have been without the clock tower or 007 without his trusty wristwatch full of spy gadgets?

If art imitates life, the role of the wristwatch becomes pivotal as it morphs from a device used to count time, to one that acquires new depths, just as the characters playing their roles. Watches gain a renewed sense of purpose as characters are given this reference to time...to consider, to rethink and ponder before rushing headstrong into needed conclusions.

Many of the watches used in cinema reflect the personality of the character who wears them, not only of the heroes but also of the villains. In the 22nd Bond movie Quantum of Solace; the watch itself evokes the physical looks of the villain.

Many of us hold a strong sentimental value for our father`s or grandfather`s wristwatch. This is one of the most honored family relics, handed from one generation to another and displayed quite prominently by the hero of the cult movie Pulp fiction, Butch Coolodge (Bruce Willis). Butch tells his father`s story about being taken captive in Vietnam for 5 years and that he managed to hide his wristwatch, a family relic, all the while the wristwatch is on Butch`s own wrist. It is not always necessary for watches to only be the `good guys` accessory, but whoever wears the watch, villain or hero, it is not just the wearing of the watch that counts, but also how they use it.
